Water Activities

Boating is organised it so that as many Scouts as possible get the opportunity to take part in boating activities, The sessions are organised with a view to completing Scout badges and also external body qualifications.

In kayaking/canoeing the BCU syllabus is followed with awards made as appropriate, in sailing the RYA youth stages are followed.

Boating will take place in 2016 on Saturday mornings at 0930 starting on To Be Decided. . This year we will be expecting the Scouts to learn all about getting ready for a session and clearing up afterwards and therefore the times have been extended. We may offer other weekday evenings but this is not yet decided. If parents have an opinion plese let us know.

We may organise extra sessions with the Wallasey Scout Boathouse and West Kirby Sailing Club. A session on the tide may be offered by Dee Sailing Club.

All Scouts are encouraged to participate and with more help from parents and friends we can make these sessions very enjoyable as well as instructive.

Cub Scouts: It is hoped to extend boating to the Cubs in 2016 but the detail has not been sorted yet.

Most times at the boating sessions it will only our group of Scouts, Leaders and specialist helpers who will be attending the boating sessions. Sometimes other instructors may be present from West Kirby Sailing Club and Dee Sailing Club.

We do not charge anything for these sessions as it is included in the subscriptions for Scouts but any external course we put on will incur a charge. Any such sessions will be fully notified to parents and Scouts well in advance.

We provide buoyancy aids, helmets and boats. Scouts must attend in appropriate clothing and bring a complete spare set of dry clothes and a towel before they are allowed on the water.

Clothing does not have to fancy or expensive. Such items required are waterproofs – jacket + trousers. Warm clothes to be worn for boating activities - lots of thin layers and no jeans! Hat and gloves if cold. In early season boating, such as April and early May, it is not summer so do turn up with warm clothes,

Soft footwear to boat in (no boots or wellies) i.e. old trainers

Basically any old clothes that won’t be ruined by the lake water. (But definitely NOT jeans.)

Ideal clothing is a wetsuit, rash vest and kayaking boots though not necessary. These items can be purchased locally from Bikes and Boards, Banks Road (don’t know prices), Tesco in Bidston and Aldi often have wetsuits. Wirral Sports in Birkenhead sells some wetsuits as does Reliance Marine in Hoylake/West Kirby. T K Maxx sometimes sells rash vests as UV protection and are cheaper that buying the same item from a specialist shop.

Should you wish to sell/buy Scout/Watersport clothing/equipment between parents then please contact the Quatermaster at boating sessions. He will arrange to act as an intermediary between sellers and buyers.

We welcome as much help on boating sessions as possible. There are plenty of tasks you can help with which relieves the Leaders to get on with the main task. Work such as getting the boats out and back in, keeping an eye on the Scouts, making the coffee for helpers and Leaders, taking the register of Scouts attending. Any boating skills or enthusiastic learners should contact the Leadership team for more advice.
